I am so excited to be your newborn photographer!

I'm a mama of three myself, so I understand the desire to hang onto these early days as much as possible! As your photographer, it's my goal to capture all the tiny details, so you can look back on these days and remember every roll, dimple and itty bitty toe.

I love coffee and chocolate, I spend my down time getting lost in a good book, and would usually rather be travelling.

I'm honoured to be trusted with your sweet memories of this momentous time in life, and I can hardly wait to meet you and your family!

You've booked your newborn session! Yay!

Hey, I'm Kelly!

Before your session...

We both want your photos to be everything you dream of! Here are some things you can do to prepare prior to your session for the best possible results!

Styling your family

Styling your newborn

Preparing your home

Comfortable outfits are great for newborn sessions, but please avoid sweatpants, hoodies and yoga pants. Think more like you’re dressing to have friends over for a nice dinner. Sweater and nice jeans are fine but I always recommend a casual dress for mama as dresses are always flattering! If you need some outfit ideas, you can check out my Pinterest board here.

Avoid being too matchy. Coordinating is great, but we don't want you to blend into a each other! I also have a Pinterest board of colour palettes to help you if you need it! I recommend finding a palette you love and pulling some outfits with those colours. If you need any advice or want to run your outfits by me, feel free! I love helping to style my clients for their sessions!

Don't be afraid of patterns, but not too many or too busy is best.

Avoid logos or written sayings on clothing and make sure no phones or keys are in any pockets!

If you're struggling to find yourself an outfit, you can always access my client closet!

During these sessions, we'll utilize the places in your home that have the best natural light. Light permitting, I like to use the living room, master bedroom and nursery, but any little nook next to a window will work if necessary!

Please ensure these spaces are free from clutter, as I do not edit mess out of images. I know it can be difficult to find time to clean with a newborn, so even just throwing things in a box that can be easily moved out of the shot is great!

I recommend a neutral or solid coloured bed spread or blanket for your bedroom to keep images from feeling busy. White is ideal but any lighter colour should work!

If you have a nursery, a solid coloured crib sheet is recommended so we don't end up with too many patterns all in one space.

Neutral, solid light coloured onesies and your favourite swaddle blanket are really all you need for your sweet babe so we can pull back the blanket and get those little details.

I do bring along a small newborn client closet of onesies, swaddles, hats, bows and leggings if you prefer.

The Day of our session...

Ensure your home is warm, but comfortable to encourage baby to sleep even while we remove layers to photograph those rolls and toes.

I recommend keeping baby awake for about two hours, then swaddling and feeding baby shortly before our session. Try to be ready yourself prior to feeding if you can so you can sit and snuggle your little one until they're in a deeper sleep.

Don't worry if baby doesn't sleep! With lifestyle photography, we don't need to put baby in any positions he or she doesn't naturally assume, so it's not a big deal if they don't sleep.

Getting ready

Siblings

What to expect

If your baby is fussy or hungry, don't worry! I schedule 2 hours for these sessions to create a lot of space for baby to feed and be soothed. If your little one needs a modelling break, I'm happy to hang out and wait until baby is settled.

My style is all about the natural connection between parents and their children, so we don't do too much sitting and smiling at the camera. I'll be gently directing you throughout the session, but really your job is to snuggle with and enjoy your new baby!

Older siblings are always so much fun during these sessions, but toddlers and pre-schoolers can be unpredictable. As your session date approaches, try to talk excitedly about the photoshoot and get them excited about participating.

If you're comfortable, I highly recommend coming up with a reward for your older child or children if they happily participate during the session. This could be anything from ice cream to a TV show after the session - whatever you're comfortable with! Make sure it's something you can give them AFTER the session, not during.

Older siblings run the show! When big brother or sister wants to participate, we'll make sure to use that time to capture sibling or full family images. If he or she needs a play break, we'll focus on mom and baby, dad and baby, or detail images until they're ready to join in on the fun again!

After your session

I try my best to post a sneak peek from our session on my Instagram account within 24 to 48 hours after our session because I know it's hard to wait! It can sometimes take a day or two longer depending on how crazy my children are that week!

Within one week, we'll schedule your image reveal! We'll go through each of the best images from your session so you can decide which ones you can't live without. At this point, you can choose if you want your images in gorgeous high-end frames, put in an heirloom album, or turned into birth announcements to send all your friends and family! Each piece of wall art also includes the digital image, so you can share them on your social media as well.
